The Indian government has taken a major step towards the non-ferrous metals industry by mandating 5% recycled content in all new products from the beginning of the financial year 2027-28.
This measure covers non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper and zinc.
$10 billion investment for Aditya Birla Group-owned Hindalco Industries
Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla made clear his plans near-term projects related to aluminium and copper smelters, including the Aditya flat-rolled plant, a greenfield alumina refinery at Rayadaga and the Bay Minnette expansion at Novelis.
In addition, Hindalco is setting up a greenfield alumina refinery at Rayagada, Odisha, with the first phase having a capacity of 850,000 tonnes and expected to be commissioned in 2026-27. All these expansion projects are aligned with the growing domestic demand for aluminium in India.
The Indian aluminium market in 2023 was valued at around US$ 11.28 billion and is projected to reach US$ 19.76 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 7.6% from 2024 to 2030.
